Moves - Star inflation trader Cypel leaving Citigroup
Star inflation trader Douglas Cypel is leaving Citigroup, according to sources familiar with the matter, in the latest sign of the strong demand for trading talent in these niche markets.
Cypel's destination couldn't immediately be established, although some sources said he was heading for a hedge fund.
A Citi spokesperson declined to comment. Cypel didn't immediately respond to a request for comment through LinkedIn.
Cypel is widely regarded as one of the best inflation traders in the market. He joined Citi in 2020 from Credit Agricole, according to his LinkedIn profile, and was subsequently promoted to head of euro inflation trading in 2023 and head of G3 inflation trading the following year.
Inflation traders have been in demand ever since a once-in-a-generation surge in consumer prices in 2022 triggered a flurry of client activity. Banks recorded another jump in inflation trading revenues in the first half of last year as concerns over US tariffs again fuelled interest in these markets.
